Stress, depression or anxiety and musculoskeletal disorders accounted for the majority of days lost due to work-related ill-health - 15.4 million and 6.6 million respectively.
Working days lost
In 2017-18, an average of 25.8 days was lost to stress, depression and anxiety of those who were absent through illness. This compares to an average of 14 days for musculoskeletal disorders.
Cost benefit of providing mental ill-health prevention
Promoting wellbeing at work through personalised information and advice, a risk-assessment questionnaire, seminars, workshops and web-based materials will cost approximately £80 per employee per year. For a company with 500 employees, where all employees undergo the intervention, it is estimated that an initial investment of £40,000 will result in a net return of £347,722 in savings, mainly due to reduced presenteeism (lost productivity due to an employee working while ill) and absence through mental ill-health.

Cost benefit of providing mental ill-health intervention
Introducing a workplace intervention in the form of employee screening and care management for those living with, or at risk of, depression was estimated to cost £40 per employee for assessment, and a further £305.00 for the use of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to manage the problem.
According to an economic model, in a company of 500 employees, where two thirds are offered and accept the treatment, an investment of £26,366 will result in a net profit of approximately £106,196 over a two year period (Based on 2009 figures, calculated at a yearly inflation rate of 3.1%).
Average cost of absence
In a company with 100 employees, the average yearly cost of absence is £522,000. This is higher in the public sector, with an average cost of yearly absence at £835,000.
